To start on a positive note, I actually have two answers for the best food I’ve had. The first is Halušky, which I personally interpret as being in a similar niche to macaroni and cheese in the U.S. in the sense that it is very common and enjoyed by all. It is a dish consisting of cooked potato dumplings (not rolled out and folded, they are similar to curds) and a popular sheep cheese called bryndza. The dish is a national specialty and is quite delicious.

The second of the best foods I have had is called marlenka, which is a hungarian honey cake, sometimes with chocolate added, sometimes without. Both variations are delicious and it is on here purely because it is some of the best cake I’ve ever had.
The worst food I have had is something that I do not recall the slovak name for, but it roughly translates to pork jelly. It is made out of the scraps of the pig, either suspended in something like jello, or contained in a sausage like casing. My experience is with the latter, and when I was given a piece there were pig hairs visibly sticking out of the meat, which was admittedly quite off-putting. It did not taste like much of anything but the texture was absolutely horrible and I don’t even go near that stuff anymore.
Regardless, I have had the opportunity to try many new foods and these are only a few that I have spoken about. Please feel free to ask about anything you are curious about, as I would love to answer to the best of my ability, I have set up a place for anyone to submit questions on the main page, at the top on the right side of the screen.
I am looking forward to having more inquiries!
I love this photo! The fact it is something you made yourself makes it even better.
I like it quite much for that reason as well! If only you could’ve tasted it too, it was quite delicious.
I totally agree with Dad, Im seriously proud of you for making that! Good for you Addy! It actually looks and sounds delicious, perhaps we might be able to convince you to make it for us when you get back…?? Fingers crossed.
I’d love to! The ingredients can be hard to find in the U.S. though, but there are substitutions that can get pretty close so we can figure something out for sure.
Hairy Sausage is a great name for a punk band. 🙂
Enjoy your adventure!
